Nearly half of the 6 million pregnancies in the United States each year are unplanned. Upstream is a fast-growing nonprofit reducing unplanned pregnancy by expanding equitable access to the full range of contraceptive options, improving outcomes and care at health center partners that serve hundreds of thousands of patients each year. Upstream is on track to achieve nationwide impact at scale.

To make sure that more women were educated about the full range of birth control choices, they instituted a “pregnancy intention” question, so that every time a woman in Delaware sees a health-care professional—even for a wellness checkup or a case of the flu—she’s asked, “Do you intend to become pregnant in the next year?”
